Summary:

During her senior year in high school, Maddie Burch promised herself not to ever fall for a cute guy – or any guy – again. Cute guys are players and not to be trusted, a fact she learned the hard way when her first boyfriend ran her heart through a paper shredder. Two years later, her promise is still intact, and she’s determined to make it through college without falling victim to another creep. She has her job, school and The Guys Are Props Club to keep her mind and hormones in check.

The club was founded by Jessica, Maddie’s best friend. It is a sisterhood of girls who have fallen prey to heartless jerks and who have vowed to turn the tables. Once a semester, Jessica requires members to “do onto others as they’ve done unto you.” Setting the example, Jessica’s next play is Sebastian Capello, a theater major with heartthrob looks and a flair for Latin dance, whose heart she plans to break the way hers was once broken.

What the friends don’t know is that Sebastian is different. Despite his perfect looks and popularity, he’s not a jerk. He doesn’t play games to get his way. Instead, he keeps it real and goes after what he wants with honest intentions. And what he wants is not a bombshell like Jessica, but a down-to-earth girl like Maddie – even if it causes a riff in the girl’s friendship. Even if it means getting Maddie to break her personal vow.

*** Due to language and sexual situations this book is recommended for ages 17 and older.

Review:

Have you ever experience being heartbroken? Feeling as if your heart is being stomp on by an elephant or shattered into tiny million pieces. I know you do, in fact, we all experienced that before. And that’s why The G.A.P Club is formed. Jessica and Maddie thought up an idea (it’s mostly Jessica) to get back to the guys that are just like those ones who hurt them—the kind of guy who plays girl’s heart in the palm of their hands—the playboy kind of guy. Maddie’s been feeling crappy for what they did to guys and she’s planning to lay low and maybe gradually let herself out in the club this semester. Then enter Sebastian, hottie extraordinary. The kind of guy that really looks like a player and Jessica wants him to be her next victim. Unfortunately, it’s not Jessica that Sebastian’s attracted to, it’s Maddie. And Sebastian is not what they think he is. He might not be the kind of guy that they thought he would be. As the saying goes, don’t judge a book by its cover or in this case, don’t judge someone by just how he looks.

The Guys Are Props Club is the answer to my prayer. It’s my saving grace. It saves me from going through a reading slump. Lately, I’ve been feeling pretty hopeless because all the books I’ve been reading these past few weeks just fell flat for me and I just desperately want to read a good book that will caught all my attention to it, that will help me forget my stressful life as a student and that will make me feel that feeling of enjoyment out of reading a book. And thankfully, my answer came in the form of this book.

This is one of those books that you will have a hard time thinking up of adjectives that could suffice to its awesomeness. The moment I read the first page, I already have a gut feeling that I will really love the book. And I was right, it really caught my attention to the point of finishing it in one sitting when I originally plan on just reading the first few chapters. This book is the bomb! I can gush over it for several hours and not get tired of it. It was THAT awesome.

What I especially like in this book was Maddie. I didn’t really expect that she would actually be an enjoyable character to read about. She’s witty and I love the fact that it took her quite a long time before she succumb and admitted to herself that she’s in love with Sebastian. I also love Sebastian! It’s not every day that you’ll encounter a guy like him—a hot straight guy who dances ballroom. I’m amazed as to how far he’s willing to do anything just to prove that he’s serious about Maddie and also to show her that he is not the guy that she thought he was. He’s deemed to be included in my list of drool worthy guys.

The pacing of the story is just right. It’s not too slow that you’ll eventually fall asleep and it is also not too fast that you will have a hard time keeping up with the things that are happening in the book, it’s the  right perfect pacing. Two thumbs up to the author!

The Guys Are Props Club deserves to get a five shimmering stars. I strongly insist suggest for you to get a copy of this book and start reading it as soon as you got your own copy. You’ll miss the bragging rights in reading this gem if you don’t read it.

Excerpt

“Isn’t he an absolute caramel?” Jessica asked, following my gaze.

“Who?” I pretended to be looking at Cristina as she instructed Sebastian’s new partner.

“Sebastian, who else?”

“Oh, yeah. He’s . . . good looking.”

“Good looking?” Jessica looked appalled. “That would be like calling the sky blue when it is clearly celestial.”
